SAN DIEGO — Chip Hanauer, who will go for his eighth consecutive APBA Gold Cup victory today, broke the unlimited hydroplane records for one-and two-lap qualifying runs Saturday on the 2.5-mile Mission Bay course.
Hanauer, of Seattle, piloted his Circus Circus turbine-powered boat to the fastest unlimited lap ever, 158.870 m.p.h. That bettered the record of 156.169 set here last year by Tom D’Eath in the Miss Budweiser.
Hanauer’s two-lap qualifying mark of 158.297 m.p.h. broke his old record of 149.031 set here in 1987.
