WORLD : Rushdie Publisher’s Store Bombed
YORK, England — A small bomb shattered the window of a York bookstore owned by the publisher of Salman Rushdie’s novel “The Satanic Verses,” and bombs were found at three of the publisher’s stores in other towns, police said today.
The Viking Penguin bookstore in the center of this northern city was closed Wednesday night when the blast occurred, causing minor damage and no injuries, police said.
In the Netherlands, four teen-age students were arrested for threatening to bomb stores belonging to a retail chain if it did not stop stocking the controversial novel, which many Muslims consider blasphemous.
