Goldsmith Loses Another Round: In Los Angeles, U.S. District Judge Edward Rafeedie rejected the request by Sir James Goldsmith and his Hoylake Investments Ltd. for a preliminary injunction barring the California Department of Insurance from reviewing his $21.1-billion bid for BAT Industries PLC, the parent of insurance giant Farmers Group Inc. Goldsmith has agreed to sell Farmers, the third-largest home and auto insurance company in the U.S., to French insurer Axa Midi Assurances for $4.5 billion if his takeover succeeds for BAT.
