‘War in Europe: 50-Year Legacy’

In the overview “War Turned Impoverished U.S. Into a Superpower” (Aug. 31), Stanley Meisler notes: “Some Americans feared that unemployment and depression would return after demobilization of the armed forces.”
I think at this point he should have mentioned that it was just this thinking that transformed the War Department into the Defense Department and put us on a permanent wartime economy.
