THE SIDELINES : City Asked to Pay Tyson’s Air Fare
EDMONTON, Alberta — Boxing promoter Garry Stevenson wants $25,000 from Edmonton city taxpayers to help fly Mike Tyson and others to Edmonton for the heavyweight champion’s Nov. 18 title bout against Donovan (Razor) Ruddock.
“We are investing $3.4 million,” Stevenson said Wednesday. “We are doing a tremendous thing for the city and we are just looking for a token payment.”
Ken Kozak, chairman of the Edmonton Boxing and Wrestling Commission, presented the request to the City Council’s Executive Committee on Wednesday.
Stevenson said he will be upset if government funding isn’t granted, but that it won’t stop the event from going ahead.
Under the contract for the fight, Stevenson is responsible for air fare for the group, which includes fighters, handlers, secretaries and lawyers.
