Fullerton Opens Season Today at Northern Illinois

Cal State Fullerton, seeking its first winning record since 1985, opens its season today against Northern Illinois at 4:35 p.m.

The Titans, who finished 5-6 last season, are opening on the road for the seventh straight year.

Fullerton has a veteran offense led by quarterback Dan Speltz, who threw for 1,924 yards last season, leading rusher Mike Pringle and leading receiver Rocky Palamara.

But the Titan defense is untested, with only three starters back. Three defensive starters have never dressed for a major-college game before.

Northern Illinois is coming off a 7-4 season that included victories over Wisconsin and Western Michigan, winner of the Mid-American Conference.

The teams have met twice before. Northern Illinois scored a 20-13 victory in the 1983 California Bowl, when Northern Illinois was a member of the Mid-American Conference. Two years ago, Fullerton won at DeKalb, 21-20, when the Huskies’ two-point conversion try failed with no time on the clock.
