Jobs Ads Down From a Year Ago: The volume of help-wanted job advertising in 51 of the nation’s major newspapers rose in July but was significantly below year-ago levels, the Conference Board reported. The board’s seasonally adjusted help-wanted advertising index rose 3 points to 149 in July after a three-month string of declines. About 63% of the papers reported rising want-ad volume. In July, 1988, the index was 160 and slightly more than 70% of newspapers reported rising ad volume.
