The U.N. Security Council adopted a resolution deploring Israel’s deportation of Arabs suspected of organizing the Palestinian uprising, the strongest action the council has taken on the deportation issue. The United States, refusing to use its veto power to protect Israel, abstained, and the resolution passed 14 to 0. U.S. Ambassador Thomas R. Pickering, a former ambassador to Israel, said deportations provoke Arab-Israeli tension in the region. On Sunday, Israel deported five Arabs from the West Bank, sending four to Lebanon and one to France. In July, the council passed a similar resolution using milder language.
