THE SIDELINES : Americans Hot in Italy Hoop Debut
ROSETO DEGLI ABRUZZI, Italy — Danny Ferry and Brian Shaw, the newly acquired American basketball stars of Messaggero Roma, combined for more than half their team’s points in a tournament game Tuesday night.
Ferry scored 30 points and Shaw added 23 as Messaggero trounced second-division Penapesca Montecatini 104-80 in the opening round of the Lido delle Rose tournament. It was the first tournament game in Italy for Ferry, the Duke All-American who spurned the Clippers, and Shaw, formerly of the Boston Celtics.
The victory gave Messaggero a berth in the tournament finals against Arimo Bologna, whose lineup includes Americans Chris McNealy and Dave Feitl. Feitl and McNealy scored 21 and 15 points, respectively, in Arimo’s 94-82 victory over Rangers Varese.
