The pilot of a Marine aircraft missing from Camp Pendleton since Thursday has been identified as Capt. Sergio Vivaldi, 29, of Port Chester, N.Y., Marine officials said this morning.
Vivaldi and observer 1st Lt. Joel Piehl, 31, of Bismarck, N.D., have been missing since their OV-10A reconnaissance aircraft failed to return to the San Diego County base at 2:30 p.m. Thursday after a training mission.
Aircraft from the Marine Corps Air Station in Tustin and Camp Pendleton have searched an area as far east as Phoenix and as far north as Las Vegas for the missing craft, an olive-colored twin-engine turboprop used to take aerial photos.
