Don’t Pass the Creem

So, publisher Marvin Jarrett is trying to resuscitate Creem magazine (Pop Eye, Aug. 13). Better save your money, Marv. Creem died long before it ceased publication, killed by the unbelievably boring and sterile music of the vast majority of chart-toppers in the ‘80s.
The Creem I loved savagely attacked the pretension and careerism of rock “artists.” Criticizing most pop stars today is like criticizing a Mickey Mouse cartoon. In an era when even the biggest stars are under the thumbs of their record companies, Creem became an anachronism, a beautiful anachronism, but an anachronism nonetheless.
