NATO said that Bulgaria’s treatment of its ethnic Turkish minority is a flagrant violation of human rights and urged the government to arrange an orderly emigration. In a statement issued on behalf of the 16 North Atlantic Treaty Organization nations, including Turkey, NATO Secretary General Manfred Woerner said the mass emigration of ethnic Turks from Bulgaria stems from “the deliberate deprivation of their human rights.” More than 250,000 ethnic Turks have fled to Turkey from Bulgaria since May, according to Turkish state radio. The refugees say they are escaping a forced assimilation.
