Titan Catcher Mayne Signs With Royals

Catcher Brent Mayne of Cal State Fullerton, Kansas City’s first-round pick, signed a contract Friday, the Royals’ announced.

Another catcher, Julio Vargas of Santa Ana High School, signed with the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday.

Mayne, the 13th pick overall, will report Sunday to the Royals’ Class-A team at Baseball City in the Florida League. Mayne, who also played at Costa Mesa High School and Orange Coast College. Mayne hit .350 this season. As a sophomore, he hit .393 and had a school record 38-game hitting streak.

Vargas was assigned to Marysville, Va., of the Appalachian Rookie League.
