Nissan Engine Assembly Under Way at Smyrna Site
DETROIT — Nissan Motor Manufacturing Corp. U.S.A. says it has started assembling automobile engines at its manufacturing complex in Smyrna, Tenn.
Engine production is to reach 11,200 a month in September, Nissan President Jerry Benefield said. The engines are for Nissan Sentra cars that the Japan-based company assembles in Smyrna.
The engine-making operation will employ 94 workers on two shifts when full production is reached. Benefield said the facility will have the capacity to assemble 13,200 engines a month in 10 versions.
In addition to the Sentra, Nissan assembles light trucks at its Smyrna plant, which employs about 3,200 people on two shifts.
