Hogan No Competition for ‘Indiana Jones’

Just 12 days in release, “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade” has grossed a whopping $77.4 million. (Can it pass the $100 million mark in its third week? It’s possible.) Over the weekend, ticket sales for the last episode of this popular trilogy about a rogue archeologist’s exploits declined to a still stunning $21.2 million, or $9,123 per screen. Paramount on Monday announced that it will release the film on a record 2,000 screens internationally, starting in London on June 27 at a premiere (the guest list includes Prince Charles). Despite the competition, “No Holds Barred,” Hulk Hogan’s latest, opened at a healthy $5 million, averaging $3,790 per screen.

* Disney/Touchstone’s counter-programming during this summer of blockbusters is beginning to look like a smart strategy. The studio’s “Dead Poets Society,” starring Robin Williams as a poetry teacher in a regimented boy’s prep school, grossed $340,456 for a healthy per-screen average of $42,557.
