Corona del Mar Baroque Festival Set
Four concerts in an eight-day period again compose the Corona del Mar Baroque Music Festival, Sunday through June 11. As in previous years, the events will be presented at St. Michael & All Angels Church and the Sherman Library and Gardens.
Founder-conductor Burton Karson will lead the opening concert, Sunday at 8 p.m. at St. Michael & All Angels Church, when organist Mary Preston will be the soloist.
At the Sherman Gardens, Wednesday at 8 p.m., a festival quartet composed of soprano Su Harmon, clarinetist Kalman Bloch, flutist Cynthia Ellis and harpsichordist Lucinda Carver will play music by Bach, Couperin, Villa-Lobos, Dahl and Trimble.
The premiere performance of Lloyd Rodgers’ “Lamentation of Myrrha” will be given at the June 9 concert at Sherman Gardens. Mezzo-soprano Lori Marcum will be assisted by an ensemble of harpsichord, guitar and strings in the new, 15-minute work based on a poem about the birth of Adonis.
The festival closes June 11 at 8 p.m. at St. Michael & All Angels with a program of cantatas and concertos by Briegel, Heinichen, Brahms and J.S. Bach, performed by the Festival Singers and Orchestra.
