Mark Lenzi of Indiana University and Gao Min of China won the men’s and women’s one-meter springboard events, respectively, at Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., in a diving meet involving the United States, China and the Soviet Union.
Lenzi, the National Collegiate Athletic Assn. champion, easily beat China’s two Olympic springboard medalists, Tan Liangde and Li Deliang. Lenzi scored 610.85 points, Liangde 562.10 and Deliang 556.05.
Liangde finished second to the now-retired Greg Louganis in each of the last two Olympics.
The men’s three-meter springboard and women’s platform competition is scheduled for today in the three-day meet, the first triangular involving the three countries.
With each nation sending two national team members into every event, the Chinese finished the first day leading in team competition with 18 points. The United States had 15 and the Soviets 12.
