More than 1,000 physicists, including 13 Nobel laureates, have signed an international petition calling on Israel to release Taysir Aruri, a Palestinian professor who has been imprisoned without charge or formal trial for nearly a year. Aruri, a physicist and lecturer at Birzeit University in the West Bank, has been under an Israeli deportation order since August, 1988, reportedly for being an activist in the Palestinian uprising against Israeli rule.
