IN BRIEF : Pirates’ Jim Gott Lost for Season
PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh Pirates lost reliever Jim Gott for the rest of the season today after arthroscopic surgery to remove a bone spur from his right elbow.
Gott, 29, a right-hander, pitched just two-thirds of an inning this season, giving up one walk and one hit and getting one strikeout against the Montreal Expos on April 6 before leaving with a sore arm.
Last year, he was 6-6 with a 3.49 ERA in 67 games. He was second in saves and games finished in the National League last season.
Team surgeon Dr. Jack Failla operated on Gott at North Hills Passavant Hospital today. During the exploratory portion of the surgery, Failla also found it necessary to repair the medial collateral ligament, according to the team.
