High School Baseball : Notre Dame Slides to 3-1 Victory

Notre Dame High took sole possession of first place in the San Fernando Valley League on Wednesday by stealing five bases en route to a 3-1 victory over last-place Bell-Jeff at Notre Dame.

For Notre Dame (22-5 overall, 7-2 in league play), Vinny Orlando scored on an error in the second inning and again on a single by Steve Martinez in the fourth. Chris Lohman singled in Chad Ratliff in the third.

Tony Cesta had two hits for Bell-Jeff (15-13, 1-8).

In other San Fernando Valley League games:

La Salle 11, Chaminade 5--La Salle (11-8, 6-3) moved into a second-place tie with Chaminade after chasing freshman left-hander Ted Corcoran (2-2) in the second inning and leaping to a 7-0 lead after three innings.

Chaminade (11-12, 6-3) scored two runs in the fourth on consecutive doubles by Justin Stark and Aaron Weiss and a single by Jeff Burdick.

Despite the loss, the Eagles clinched a playoff berth with St. Genevieve’s loss to Harvard.

Harvard 7, St. Genevieve 4--David Lee struck out four and scattered five hits and the Saracens overcame five errors to eliminate St. Genevieve (10-10, 4-5) from playoff contention.

Tim Pera and Cary Iaccino each drove in a run in a losing effort.

MARMONTE LEAGUE

Westlake 10, Royal 6--Host Westlake survived four home runs, one off each Warrior pitcher.

Zak Haynes (2-1) entered in the third and pitched two innings to earn the win. Derek Tamburro, who was two for two with three RBIs, homered for Westlake (11-13, 5-7). Steve Susko was two for three.

Jason Jones hit his eighth and ninth home runs for Royal (12-17, 4-8) and finished with a school-record 41 hits. James Jones and Richie Naranjo also hit home runs.

Newbury Park 5, Camarillo 1--Eric Greene had three of the Panthers’ seven hits, including a two-run double in the seventh, at Camarillo.

Jeremy Dewey (7-2) allowed five hits and struck out three. Newbury Park (18-4-3, 9-3) finished second in league play. Camarillo finished 12-13, 5-7.

TRI-VALLEY LEAGUE

Moorpark 9, Carpinteria 4--The Musketeers (14-5, 10-4) parlayed consecutive doubles by Robert Hernandez, Jamie Kohls and Tom Uphoff into five runs in a seven-run sixth inning at Carpinteria.

CHANNEL LEAGUE

Rio Mesa 13, San Marcos 3--Adam Basua hit a bases-loaded double to score three runs and Shea Freeman singled in two more in the Spartans’ seven-run first inning at San Marcos.

The victory assured Rio Mesa (13-8-1, 9-3-1) of a Southern Section 4-A Division playoff berth.
