From Reuters
DHAKA, Bangladesh — At least 14 women were killed and about 30 were injured when thousands of beggars stampeded Friday for free clothes distributed by a rich merchant in Chandpur, southern Bangladesh, hospital sources said.
They said 14 women and children were taken to hospital in serious condition. Unofficial sources put the death toll at 20 and said nearly 70 were injured.
Police said the victims were in a long line outside the home of Fazlur Rahman Choudhury and were trampled by a pushing crowd as soon as the distribution started.
