Note of Dissatisfaction
There is an element on most albums that Times critic Mike Boehm seems to find of secondary importance. Maybe the album cover, the crowd’s roars, and his views on mass marketing have their places, but I feel confident that most people read record reviews to find out about the music.
In Boehm’s review of Depeche Mode’s “101” (“Concert Souvenir From Depeche Mode,” Calendar, April 16), he offered the reader precious little insight into the vocal, musical or lyrical styles of the band. This alienated me to the point that I do not care a whit about anything else he said. In his zest for wryness, he made every word--and the less-than-favorable two-star rating--of utterly no consequence.
