Liege, Belgium
Belgium took a 2-0 lead on the opening day of its match against Turkey.
Belgian Denis Langaskens defeated Alaedin Karagoz of Turkey 6-0, 6-0, 6-4, and Bart Wuyts of Belgium downed Turkey’s Yavuz Erkangil 6-2, 6-2, 6-1.
Manila, Philippines
Kelly Evernden and Steve Guy won their singles matches to give New Zealand a commanding 2-0 lead in its Asia-Oceania against the Philippines.
Evernden defeated Felix Barrientos 6-4, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2, and Guy stopped Miguel Dungo III 6-3, 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 to move the New Zealanders within one point of clinching the contest.
New Delhi, India
Kim Bong Soo defeated Zeeshan Ali 6-4, 6-7, 6-2, 8-7 to give South Korea a 1-0 lead over India.
The United News of India said the second singles match was halted after three sets because of poor light with South Korea’s Yoo Jin Sun leading India’s Srinivas Vasudevan 6-3, 3-6, 7-6.
Liestal, Switzerland
Favored Switzerland took a 2-0 lead over Romania after the first day of play.
Claudio Mezzadri, ranked 184th in the world, defeated Romania’s Adrian Marcu 4-6, 6-1, 6-4, 6-4 in a match that lasted 2 hours, 45 minutes.
In the second singles, Jakob Hlasek of Switzerland, ranked eighth in the world, also had unexpected trouble before defeating George Cosac of Romania 6-1, 1-6, 7-5. 6-3
