The Preps : Track and Field Roundup : Fatone Beats Pinto in Leading Los Alamitos
Tracey Fatone proved that last week’s victory over Martha Pinto was no fluke as the freshman again defeated Pinto in the 1,600 meters to help Los Alamitos High School win the girls’ Empire League track and field finals Thursday at Fullerton College.
The Griffins finished with 123 points. Esperanza was second with 112 1/2, and Loara finished in third place with 85.
Fatone pulled away in the last 200 yards to win in 5 minutes 10.5 seconds. Pinto was second in 5:16.9.
Fatone’s victories marked only the second time in three years that Katella’s Pinto has lost consecutive races.
The Griffins received a strong performance from Pam Kurtela, who was the team’s only double winner. Kurtela finished first in the 200 meters (26.02) and 400 meters (58.66).
Esperanza kept close as it won the 400-meter relay (50.67) and 1,600-meter relay (3:57.4). Los Alamitos was second in the 1,600 relay (4:05.6) and El Dorado third (4:13.5).
Kelly Graton led Loara, winning the 110-meter low hurdles (15.33) and 300 low hurdles (46.91). She also finished tied for second in the high jump (5 feet 4 inches).
Lori Svoboda of El Dorado won the high jump with a leap of 5-8. She was also second in the 200 (26.07).
In the Empire League boys’ meet:
Roshawn Sims won the 200 and 400 as Esperanza eased to victory at Fullerton College with 158 points. Katella was second with 97, and Loara third with 93.
Sims ran a 22.60 in the 200 to finish just ahead of Loara’s Coy Collins, who ran a 22.63. Sims also finished third in the triple jump with a leap of 42-7 1/2.
Collins was second in the triple jump at 21-7 1/4.
