NATION : U.S. Warns WHO on Admitting PLO

WASHINGTON — The United States, in a political and financial threat, said today it will pull out of the World Health Organization if the U.N. agency admits the Palestine Liberation Organization as a member state.
Such a U.S. withdrawal would cost the organization $73.8 million, one-quarter of its annual operating budget. “We feel very, very strongly about this,” State Department spokeswoman Margaret Tutwiler said. The United States vigorously opposes the PLO becoming a full member of WHO or any other U.N. agency, Tutwiler said.
