The Navy is quietly phasing out the three types of short-range nuclear missiles it would use for sea warfare, the New York Times reported. But it said the Navy remained committed to sea-based long-range cruise missiles and submarine-launched ballistic missiles. Quoting Rear Adm. George N. Gee, the paper said the move was a response to budget pressures and a belief that the rockets had limited value in defending the fleet. The ASROC nuclear depth charge, the SUBROC nuclear-armed missile and the Terrier surface-to-air missile were the three weapons cited.
