Norden’s Tustin Plant to Close Due to Lost Bid for Radar System

A United Technologies unit in Tustin has laid off 35 people because the Connecticut-based defense contractor lost a bid to build the radar system for a new Navy fighter plane.
United Technologies’ Norden Systems subsidiary will close its Tustin engineering facility by the end of May, company spokesman Bill McDonald said. About 20 workers in Tustin will be transfered to other company facilities, he said.
Norden lost a major subcontract to develop a radar system for the Navy’s Advanced Tactical Aircraft, or A-12, program. The contract had an initial value of $114 million, but future work could have boosted its worth to several billion dollars, McDonald said.
General Dynamics, the prime contractor for the A-12 program, canceled its subcontract with Norden 2 weeks ago and awarded the job to Westinghouse Electric Corp.
