Union Carbide Corp.: First-quarter net income rose 99% to $201 million on sales of $2.2 billion, up 15%. The Danbury, Conn.-based company attributed the gains to continuing strength in its chemicals and plastics business, and said it benefited from favorable raw material costs, although some chemicals and plastics prices began to level in the first quarter of 1989.
