WASHINGTON — President Bush Friday ordered that flags be flown at half staff as a mark of respect for the 47 crewmen who were killed on the battleship Iowa.
The order, contained in a presidential proclamation, will remain in effect until sunset Tuesday.
It applies to flags on all public buildings and grounds, at military posts and naval stations, on naval vessels and U.S. embassies and diplomatic posts abroad.
Bush will attend a memorial service for the victims on Monday in Norfolk, Va., home port of the Iowa.
