Wimbledon became the first $5-million tennis tournament with the announcement of a 23% increase in prize money. That boosted the purse to $5.3 million, an increase of $1 million, for this summer’s event.
The previous record for a tennis tournament was last summer’s $4.4 million at the U.S. Open. Wimbledon officials said they expect the Americans to top their amount when the prizes for the tournament in New York in September are announced next month.
