Prep Roundup : Svoboda Sparkles at Bishop Amat Relays

Lori Svoboda of El Dorado High School leaped a personal-best 5-10 3/4 to win the girls high jump at the Bishop Amat Relays Saturday at Mt. San Antonio College.

Svoboda, a senior and The Times’ female track and field athlete of the year in 1987, had a previous best of 5-10.

Other standout performances by county athletes included Katella sophomore Martha Pinto, who finished third in the 3,000 in a personal-best 10:42.2.

In boys’ events, Corona del Mar’s Eddie Lavelle (4:00.35) and Greg Shryock (4:02.5) placed second and third, respectively, in the 1,600 meters. Francis O’Neill of Escondido San Pasqual won the race in 4:00.21 by outleaning Lavelle at the tape.

Lavelle also placed a close second in the 3,000 in 8:44.0. Brett Bogess of Palos Verdes won in 8:43.8, and Scott Hemple of Walnut was third in 8:45.7.

Corona del Mar sophomore Keith Miller placed third in the pole vault with a leap of 13-6.

At the Beverly Hills Invitational:

Edison’s Keniji Arao, Dave Baker, Doug Nichols and Tom Tyler combined for a victory in the Invitational A group 1,600-meter relay in 3:25.1 at UCLA. Edison also placed third in the 400 relay (44.1) and in the sprint medley (1:35.4).

The Chargers finished 2-3-4 in the shot put with Lamont Peay (53-0), Greg Thurston (51-10) and Chris Lippincott (50-1).

In Sunset League baseball:

Marina 9, Edison 7--Chris Boyd went three for four with a grand slam in the fourth to lead Marina (9-5, 2-1) at Edison. Steve Thobe had a three-run home run to lead Edison (5-6-2, 1-2).

Fountain Valley 6, Westminster 0--Jeff Hale (2-1) pitched a two-hitter for the victory. Jeff Higbee had a home run, and Matt Hallock had a two-run double to help Fountain Valley (7-4, 2-1) at home. Westminster is 0-3 in league play.

In nonleague baseball:

Valencia 6, Troy 4--Keef Leasure had a two-run double to tie the game, 4-4, in the fifth inning and later in the inning scored the go-ahead run by stealing home. John Garcia (3-0) gave up six hits and struck out seven for the victory at home. Valencia is 7-2.

Liberty Christian 11-13, Pacific Shores 0-3--Chris Buckles (4-0) pitched a one-hitter and struck out eight to lead Liberty Christian (8-1) in the first game at Teawinkle Park in Costa Mesa. Buckles, who walked one, gave up just a lead-off single in the fifth. In the second game, Buckles had a triple and a home run with five RBIs. Pacific Shores is 0-3.

Diamond Bar 12-5, Loara 4-6--Diamond Bar scored five runs on three hits in the first inning and Ed Mylett had a grand slam in third inning for Diamond Bar in the first game at Loara. Eric Smith hit a solo home run in the sixth inning, and also received the save to lead Loara (4-9) in the second game.

In the Division 5 championship semifinal round:

Righetti 3, Huntington Beach 2 (10 innings)--Heide Tegtmeyer drove in the winning run with a single for Righetti. Tina Prato had a solo home run for Righetti (15-0) in the sixth inning.

In the Division 4 championship semifinal round:

Pacifica 9, El Modena 0--Jennifer Surface (3-1) pitched a two-hitter and struck out eight for the victory.

Diamond Bar 3, Canyon 1--Pam Barr (5-0) pitched a two-hitter and struck out 10 for the victory for Diamond Bar (9-0).

Sunny Hills 1, Kennedy 0--Winning pitcher Amy Huett struck out seven while allowing just one hit. Erin McKinney went two for two and scored the winning run for Sunny Hills.

Millikan 2, Pacifica 1--Traci Smith (3-2) pitched a one-hitter and struck out 16 for the victory. Millikan scored its runs on errors.

Savanna 2, Rolling Hills 1--Kari Schwartz pitched a three-hitter for the victory.

Western 6, Sunny Hills 2--Ivy Pinkerton went three for four with a double and Dena Petersen, Beth Queypo and Tania Sieks each had two hits for Western (14-2). Dawn Fowler (3-2) gave up six hits and struck out seven for the victory.

Western 1, Kennedy 0--Lisa Sciarrino had two hits, including a solo home run in the fourth, to lead Western. Beth Queypo (9-0) allowed two hits and struck out six for the victory.
