Road Race Set Today in Irvine
Runners from more than 20 states will compete today in the Pacific Coast 12K, beginning at 8:30 a.m. from the Jamboree Center in Irvine.
The road race will include about 50 elite runners. The race is the culmination of last year’s Zee Challenge Series, a nationwide series of road races.
The men’s and women’s winners of each Zee Challenge Series race were awarded travel expenses to the Pacific Coast race. Those include Chicago’s Jeff Jacobs and Oakland’s Randy Aseda; both have run a 10K in less than 29 minutes.
“There are a lot of fast guys, and all think they’re going to win,” race director Herb Massinger said. “It should be really exciting.”
Along with the winners of the Zee Challenge Series races, runners expected to compete include Alfredo Rojas of Gardena, Joey Gomez of Los Angeles and Harolene Walters of Mission Viejo.
