Local News in Brief : Decision on Mall Postponed

To allow more time to study an environmental impact report, the Hawthorne City Council has postponed a decision on a proposed neighborhood shopping center until its April 10 meeting.
The 34,100-square-foot shopping center would include retail stores and two restaurants--Soup Kitchen and McDonald’s. The developer of the 1.5-acre site on Rosecrans Avenue, west of the San Diego Freeway, is Comstock, Crosser & Hickey Partners of Manhattan Beach.
The retail center is the smallest of three city redevelopment projects being planned in the area. Also pending are a $160-million mixed-use project on a 38-acre site occupied by Mattel Toys Division, and a $200-million “urban village” planned for a 28-acre site.
At Monday night’s council meeting, Councilwoman Ginny M. Lambert voiced her support for the 1.5-acre development and urged the council to approve it immediately.
Councilman Steve Andersen sought a two-week postponement to allow time for a review of the environmental impact report on the project.
The council voted 4 to 1 for the postponement, with Lambert dissenting. She then changed her vote and agreed with the postponement.
