Pt. Loma Women Lose on Shot at Buzzer, 70-68
Sonja Akkerman sank an eight-foot shot at the buzzer Monday to give California Baptist College a 70-68 victory over Point Loma Nazarene College in the first round of the NAIA District III women’s basketball playoffs at Point Loma.
PLNC’s Camille Armijo made a three-pointer with 13 seconds left to tie the score, 68-68. But the Lancers pushed the ball upcourt and dumped a pass to Akkerman, a 6-foot-3 center, who turned and hit the game-winner.
PLNC finished its second consecutive 20-victory season under Coach Bill Olin at 20-11. Cal Baptist (21-10) advanced to the second round against Azusa Pacific in Azusa.
Armijo, who made six of 13 three-pointers, led PLNC with 28 points. Shannon Anderson scored 14 points and Shawndel Reddic had a career-high 14 rebounds.
Akkerman led the Lancers with 24 points and 12 rebounds.
The Crusaders shot just 32% (24 of 74) from the field, while Cal Baptist made 49% (29 of 59).
FOOTBALL
The Chargers signed their second unrestricted free agent Monday. He is Joe Caravello, a 6-3, 270-pound tight end who started six games with the Washington Redskins in 1988.
Caravello began his career as a defensive end with the Atlanta Falcons in 1986 where he played for Dan Henning, new Chargers coach. Caravello was a nose tackle and fullback in college at Tulane.
The first unrestricted free agent signed by the Chargers was Colt tackle Joel Patten two weeks ago.
The Chargers also announced they have signed seven other free agents: offensive linemen Mark Behning, Michael Scott and Eric Floyd, defensive backs Ken Hobart, Marvin Mattox and Mark Moore and running back Cedric Hosea.
Hobart and Mattox were signed by the Chargers for 1989 after attending the Chargers’ 1988 training camp.
BASEBALL
The University of San Diego (5-8) committed four errors leading to three unearned runs as Cal State Fullerton (8-4) defeated host USD, 4-1, in a nonconference game. Paul Johnson (1-1) went the distance for Fullerton, striking out 12 and scattering six hits.
