Local News in Brief : Huntington Beach : 18-Year-Old Disappears in Surf at State Beach

A search continued into the night for an 18-year-old who disappeared Friday in the surf at Huntington State Beach.
Patrick Lyons, lifeguard supervisor for the state Department of Parks and Recreation, said the youth apparently disappeared about 11:55 a.m. while swimming with two friends.
Lyons said the name of the youth, who was from outside Orange County, would be withheld while the search continued.
During the day, helicopter and boat crews as well as dive teams tried to find the youth. Lyons said the search was hampered by chilly water, strong rip currents and waves moving about 5 m.p.h.
“When you have murky water going that fast, it’s real tough to find anything,” Lyons said.
He said the search will continue today.
