High School Soccer Playoffs
In other first-round City boys’ matches:
Garfield 2, Monroe 1 (OT)--Garfield scored a shoot-out goal in the second overtime to register the upset of the third-seeded Vikings.
Garfield scored in the first shoot-out situation, but Monroe captain Sergio Vargas answered to send it into another shoot-out round--where a player goes one on one with the goalkeeper from 12 yards. Garfield, however, scored on its next attempt and Monroe missed. Jaime Leal scored the lone goal for Monroe (10-2-2).
Chatsworth 5, Cleveland 4 (OT)--After regulation play and 30 minutes of overtimes without a goal, Mike Nash’s shoot-out goal made the difference in the match at Chatsworth.
SOUTHERN SECTION BOYS
Agoura 2, Keppel 1--Nelson Townes scored a goal in each half as the Chargers advanced to the 1-A quarterfinals in the match at Agoura. His second came 20 minutes into the second half and gave Agoura its 19th win in a row.
SOUTHERN SECTION GIRLS
Alemany 1, La Serna 0--Kerri Cook and Theresa Mazziotta each were credited with half a goal as the Indians (17-6-2) advanced to the 2-A quarterfinals in a match at La Serna.
Royal 1, Dana Hills 0--Staci Blough scored 20 minutes into the first half on an assist by Tania Schraml at Dana Hills to lead the Highlanders into the quarterfinals. Kristen Rizzo had 12 saves.
