The World : 2 Mandela Guards Charged
Two members of South African activist Winnie Mandela’s controversial bodyguard were charged with murder, kidnaping and assault in the abductions of four black youths, including a 14-year-old who was later found stabbed to death. Police identified the two as Jerry Richardson, 41, the coach of the so-called Mandela United soccer club, and Jabu Sithole. The case was postponed until next week, and the two entered no plea. The charges are in connection with the death of Stompie Mokhetsi Seipie, one of four youths allegedly abducted by members of the soccer club. Mandela, wife of jailed African National Congress leader Nelson R. Mandela, again denied any part in Seipie’s killing.
