CBS Defends News Report About New Orleans Crime

NEW YORK — CBS News on Tuesday defended as “fair and objective” a recent report on violence in New Orleans that angered the news director at the network’s New Orleans affiliate.
WWL-TV news director Joe Duke, in a letter to CBS News President David Burke, said that CBS News crews will not be allowed to use the station’s facilities when covering the city’s Mardi Gras festival next year.
Duke’s Feb. 8 letter criticized as “misleading” a report on the previous night’s “CBS Evening News” that said the city’s rising murder rate could hurt the tourist trade.
