Pacific 10 Roundup : Payton Leads Oregon St. to 40-Point Win

Gary Payton scored 19 of his 31 points in the second half as Oregon State dealt Washington a 106-66 loss--the Huskies’ third-worst defeat ever--in a Pacific 10 Conference game Saturday at Seattle.
Washington’s 40-point losing margin was topped only by a 55-point defeat, 116-61, at Arizona earlier this season, and a 52-point rout by UCLA in 1974.
Eric Knox scored 22 points for the Beavers (18-5 overall, 10-4 in the Pac-10), while Teo Alibegovic had 17. Eldridge Recasner and Mark West scored 12 points each for Washington (10-14, 6-9).
Washington State 60, Oregon 54--Harold Wright scored all five of his points and added a clutch steal in the final 36 seconds to help the Cougars down the Ducks at Pullman, Wash.
Brian Quinnett scored 17 points for Washington State (8-15, 3-11), and his basket with 8:14 left gave the Cougars a 46-32 lead.
Mike Helms had eight of his 18 points in a 22-9 run by Oregon (8-16, 3-11) that included 10 straight points. Helms’ jumper with 1:09 left cut Washington State’s lead to 55-54.
Wright entered the game for the first time with 52 seconds left and made a three-point play with 36 seconds left, then added two free throws with 25 seconds remaining.
