MEN’S BASKETBALL
Six players scored in double figures as Christian Heritage defeated The Masters, 108-90, in a nonconference game at Granite Hills High School.
Brad Soucie led Christian Heritage (21-5) with 21 points, Mark Kraatz scored 20, Rundy Foster had 16, Dave Kirksey added 14 and Will Cunningham and Bill Soucie had 11 each.
Ahead by just three at halftime, Azusa Pacific dominated the second half to defeat host Point Loma Nazarene, 107-87, in a Golden State Athletic Conference game.
Michael Benton scored 21 points to lead Azusa Pacific (9-15, 3-7). Mark Ryan scored 32 points and Ron Hubbard added 26 for Point Loma Nazarene (5-17, 3-6).
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Jill Koster had 13 points and 18 rebounds, but UC San Diego was defeated at Occidental, 71-67, snapping the Tritons’ nine-game winning streak. Tracy Ragatz and Cari Young each had 10 points for UCSD (15-5) in the nonconference game.
Amy Walter scored 22 points and Sally Cohenour, Christy Pollard and Holly Ingersoll had 12 each as Azusa Pacific defeated host Point Loma Nazarene, 65-55, in a Golden State Athletic Conference game.
Camille Armijo led Point Loma Nazarene (4-10, 3-4) with 25 points, and Lisa Mowday had 10.
Azusa Pacific (15-8, 6-2) outrebounded Point Loma Nazarene, 52-24, and committed just nine fouls to Point Loma’s 25.
BASEBALL
San Diego State, plagued by early-inning errors, gave up seven unearned runs in the second and third innings and was defeated, 8-0, at UC Riverside.
Pete Weber hit a bases-loaded triple in the second inning to give Riverside (1-4) a 4-0 lead that became 6-0 before the side was out. Steve Green (1-1) pitched five innings for the victory.
John Hemmerly (1-1) pitched two innings for San Diego State (3-2).
A.J. Napier hit a three-run homer in the second inning to spark Point Loma Nazarene to a 7-3 victory over the University of San Diego at Point Loma.
Davis Pierce struck out four in six innings for PLNC (1-0). John Danis was two for four and Randy Tippitt was two for four with a run batted in.
James Ferguson allowed five runs in three innings and took his second loss in two starts for USD (0-2). Designated hitter Chuck Graham was four for five for USD.
Dave Ligerman and Henry Jimenez each had two hits and knocked in two runs as UC San Diego defeated Christ College, 5-1, at Irvine.
Mike Morgan (1-0) pitched five innings for the victory, and Rick Rupkey struck out eight and walked one in four innings for the save.
UCSD (1-0) is ranked ninth in the NCAA Division III. Christ College (0-1) is an NAIA school.
TENNIS
Jose Luis-Noriega was a winner at No. 1 singles and doubles to lead the University of San Diego past USC, 5-3.
Noriega defeated Greg Failla, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 1 singles and teamed with Dave Stewart to defeat Failla and Curt Seton, 6-1, 6-1.
