Emirate Lifts the Veil for Passport Photos

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Authorities have ordered women to remove their veils for passport photographs, abandoning a Muslim tradition, officials said Thursday.
Until now, authorities in this Persian Gulf federation have issued passports to women without photographs or with photos showing them veiled.
An immigration source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the government changed the policy after discovering several cases of impersonation.
