The Pledge
I am surprised and disappointed that since his election George Bush has scarcely mentioned the Pledge of Allegiance. I trust he has not forgotten this critical issue which was so important to his success on Nov. 8. I expect Mr. Bush to propose legislation requiring every citizen to recite the Pledge each day. I hope that law has some teeth and I want to see it vigorously enforced. I would also like to see the President-elect appoint a secretary of the Pledge of Allegiance with full cabinet rank. It is clear that Mr. Bush recognizes that the Pledge of Allegiance is one of the most profound issues of our day. During the campaign he talked about it constantly. Now it is time to do something about it.
