World : Singapore President Has Surgery

SINGAPORE — Singapore President Wee Kim Wee underwent an operation today for removal of a cancerous growth in the rectum. A government statement said Wee’s condition after surgery was stable and he was expected to remain in hospital for two to three weeks. Wee, 73, was appointed for a four-year term to the mainly ceremonial post of president in 1985.
