Randy Barnes, 1988 silver medalist, overcame the loss of sleep after an early-morning confrontation with a gunman to record the second-best U.S. indoor shotput of all time.
Barnes, of College Station, Tex., put the shot 71 feet 10 inches in the Dallas Morning News Games, the seventh-best performance of all time and his personal best. George Woods set the U.S. best indoor mark of 72-2 3/4 in February 1974, at the Forum.
Barnes was confronted by two men in a motel parking lot in Little Rock, Ark., at 2 a.m., after a meet in Jonesboro, Ark. One of them pointed a rifle at Barnes, who ran into the lobby and called police. They arrested the two men and found the rifle was not loaded.
