WORLD : Swiss Official Quits Under Fire
BERN, Switzerland — The country’s first woman Cabinet member resigned today after a prosecutor’s report said she was “strongly suspected” of leaking confidential information to her husband about a drug inquiry.
The announcement by Justice Minister Elisabeth Koop brings to a climax this nation’s biggest scandal in years. In a phone call, she was said to have warned her husband to sever ties with a company under investigation in a major drug money-laundering scandal. He quit as board member of Lebanese-controlled Shakarchi Trading A.G. after the warning.
