The new main branch of the Los Angeles Division of the U.S. Postal Service opened Monday in part of a $151-million postal complex that will be fully operational in mid-February.
The new branch, known as Main Office Station, replaces the Florence branch, which closed last week.
Located at 7001 S. Central Ave., the new branch has 200 parking spaces, compared to 20 at the old Florence branch, and space for 7,100 post office boxes, compared to 728 at the Florence branch, according to the Postal Service. Most of the 5,000 post office box customers at the downtown Terminal Annex will eventually be moved to the new branch.
The branch will be open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. on weekdays and from 7 a.m. until 3 p.m on Saturdays.
In addition to the post office branch, the new complex will include a processing center to handle work now done at Terminal Annex. It will also include a warehouse, a vehicle maintenance garage and administrative offices.
