Events in the news this week.

Actor Rod Steiger, winner of the best-actor Oscar for his work in 1967’s “In the Heat of the Night,” will be presented today with the Torch of Liberty Award by the Orange County chapter of the Anti-Defamation League of B’nai B’rith. Steiger was selected because of his acting career, which has included 1954’s “On the Waterfront” and 1965’s “The Pawnbroker.”
