Four people were killed Tuesday on California 94 east of Dulzura when a tractor-trailer toppled onto an automobile, the California Highway Patrol reported.
A CHP spokesman said the crash occurred at 4:30 p.m. between Otay Lakes Road and Barrett Junction in the westbound lane. Details of the accident were still sketchy at 9 p.m. A spokesman for the San Diego County coroner’s office said the victims’ bodies were still at the scene 4 1/2 hours after the accident.
The identities of the victims were not known, and it was not known whether all of the dead were inside the car, which was crushed by the truck. Neither the condition or name of the truck driver was immediately available. CHP officers said they were still investigating the cause of the accident.
Initially, CHP officers kept one lane open for traffic. But at 8 p.m. they closed a 13-mile stretch of California 94 from Otay Lakes Road to California 188 as emergency crews worked to lift the trailer off the vehicle.
California 188 runs south from California 94 to the Mexican border at Tecate.
