Santa Monica : Pier Archive Planned
Officials have announced the creation of an archive chronicling the colorful history of the 80-year-old Santa Monica Pier.
The landmark will be remembered through books, movie footage, newspaper articles, artifacts and memorabilia being collected by members of the Pier Restoration Corp.
Corporation Executive Director John Gilchrist said oral histories will also be taped for the archive, which will be located on the pier and open to the public.
The creation of an archive coincides with a multimillion-dollar project to restore parts of the pier destroyed by storms in 1983 and to build new stores and restaurants along the pier.
People with photos, memorabilia or pier stories that could be included in the archive may contact Peggy Clifford at (213) 395-7579, Gilchrist said.
