MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Rare twin hippopotami born on Christmas morning are doing well but still have not been named because keepers haven’t been able to determine their sex, a Memphis Zoo spokesman said Wednesday.
“The mother is being extremely protective. She tries to place her body between you and the kids,” Houston Winbigler, assistant curator of mammals, said.
The twin hippos, which weigh about 40 pounds each, are believed to be the first born in captivity in the United States in 25 years, Winbigler said.
